Coronavirus update March 2020

Over the coming months clinician-patient interactions will be minimised, and so the opportunity for Supervised scans will be significantly diminished. Additionally, courses are not running and mentors and Supervisors are unlikely to be able to support training in the way intended. We will therefore relax the timings associated with FAMUS accreditation and strongly recommend no new registrations at this time (unless you are confident you can complete the accreditation process despite these challenges).
However, there is also a rich opportunity to scan chest pathologies, and clear suggestions that lung ultrasound in particular has an important role in the diagnosis and management of COVID patients. We would therefore encourage you to continue scanning where clinically indicated and utilise local and/or remote mentors (using media transfer software including iMessage, WhatsApp or Pando where suitable – see NHSX guidance on our dedicated coronavirus page).

Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) is the point of care ultrasound standard created specifically for Acute Medicine physicians to aid the management of the acutely unwell adult patient. It is endorsed by the Society for Acute Medicine and recognised by the AIM training committee as a specialist skill.
Please see the links on the right (Related Pages) for relevant documents, and the following pages for information on how to register, how to accredit and useful information about the training. We recommend you download and read the curriculum pack which outlines the accreditation process in detail.
