The Society for Acute Medicine is recruiting 6-8 early career resident doctors to join our resident doctors’ working group as hiRES Fellows.

 

 

Eligible applicants include:

• Doctors in Foundation training
• Doctors in Internal Medicine Stage 1 training
• Doctors in Acute Care Common Stem training
• Doctors employed locally in “trust grade” positions

While most resident doctors who rotate through the specialty will not choose to train as Acute Physicians, resident doctors nonetheless play a crucial role in the provision of safe effective care, particularly out-of-hours.

These doctors face several unique problems:

• Challenges integrating into clinical teams during short placements
• Limited access to long-term mentorship from senior clinicians
• Uncertainty about future career progression

SAM is committed to ensuring these doctors have the best possible educational experience during their time in the specialty.

What is hIRES?

hiRES is a new working group being piloted by SAM. This working group will be chaired by SAM’s elected resident representatives and will meet remotely four times a year.

The aims of this group are to:

• Represent the voice of rotational resident doctors within SAM
• Advocate for system-level changes that enhance resident doctor experience
• Identify what SAM can do to improve working lives of resident doctors

Roles & Responsibilities

Successful applicants will be appointed to a one-year term. Fellows are expected to:

• Attend three out/of four hiRes meetings
• Contribute to an annual report to SAM council
• Advocate for resident doctors working on Acute Medical Units

Activity between meetings will largely be decided by fellows themselves, but suggested activities include:

• Collecting data on the issues affecting resident doctors
• Highlighting and sharing areas of particularly good educational practice
• Gathering and distributing resources useful for doctors new to AIM

Desirable Characteristics

The ideal candidate should be:

• Enthusiastic about Acute Medicine
• Well-organised
• Capable of working in a team
• Keen to bring innovative ideas to the table

Applicants must be members of the Society for Acute Medicine and be nominated by a Consultant Acute Physician, who must not be a current member of SAM Council.
