Flourishing on the Frontline

Stories, Voices & Inspiration

Acute Medicine is shaped by the people who work in it — their experiences, ideas, challenges and the moments that keep them going.

This is a place to hear those voices. Read personal reflections, watch conversations and listen to stories from across the Acute Medicine community — not because every experience is the same, but because sharing them can help us learn, connect and feel less alone in the work we do.

Not every story needs to be about overcoming adversity. We also want to celebrate curiosity, friendship, professional pride, improvement, humour, career journeys and the moments that remind us why this specialty matters.

From the frontline

There is no single Acute Medicine experience. These stories explore the people behind the specialty — what they have learnt, what has challenged them and what continues to give the work meaning.

One story does not have to speak for everyone. The value is in hearing different perspectives and finding the parts that resonate with our own experience.

A perspective from Acute Medicine

Personal reflections can reveal the parts of working in Acute Medicine that formal guidance cannot capture — the relationships, turning points, challenges and experiences that shape a working life.

Longer conversations create space to explore careers, ideas, difficult experiences and the changing world of Acute Medicine in more depth.

This should grow with the Acute Medicine community.

The aim is to build a changing collection of real voices rather than a fixed set of wellbeing case studies — reflecting different professions, career stages, backgrounds and experiences.

Read: three perspectives

Three personal reflections from the original Flourishing on the Frontline series explore the care we want to provide, the energy the work demands and the importance of looking after ourselves.

Different experiences. A shared frontline. Personal perspectives from three people working in and around Acute Medicine.

Stories help us notice what statistics can miss.

They make visible the human experience behind working in Acute Medicine and the things that help — or hinder — people flourishing on the frontline.

Watch: challenge the assumptions

Hear directly from people working in Acute Medicine — challenging some familiar myths, talking about what they enjoy and sharing the parts of the specialty that keep them coming back.

Short films. Real perspectives. Careers in Acute Medicine are more varied — and often more rewarding — than some of the assumptions around the specialty suggest.

Acute Medicine can be intense without being joyless. These films capture some of the personality, variety and professional satisfaction that can be lost when we talk only about pressure.

Listen: conversations that go deeper

Podcasts give us more time to explore the things that do not fit into a headline — wellbeing, burnout, professional identity and the experiences that change the way we practise.

Put the conversation in your pocket. Listen on the way to work, on a walk or whenever you have space for a longer conversation.

These are just a few conversations from a much wider SAM podcast library covering clinical practice, careers, cases and the changing world of Acute Medicine.

What keeps us going?

Inspiration does not have to mean a heroic story. Often it is found in the ordinary parts of working life — the people around us, something we learnt, a patient we helped or the satisfaction of making something work a little better.

Flourishing is not pretending the work is easy.

Acute Medicine can be demanding, pressured and sometimes deeply frustrating. Recognising the things that make the work worthwhile does not mean ignoring the conditions that make it harder.

Both things can be true. We can value the people, purpose and joy in our work while continuing to challenge systems that prevent staff and patients from flourishing.
01

People

Colleagues who notice, help, teach, make us laugh and turn a difficult shift into something we do not have to carry alone.

02

Purpose

Being there when patients are acutely unwell, uncertain or frightened — and knowing our decisions can genuinely change what happens next.

03

Learning

A specialty where uncertainty is normal, curiosity matters and there is almost always something new to understand.

04

Belonging

Finding a team, a specialty or a professional community where our contribution is recognised and we feel part of something.

05

Making things better

The satisfaction of fixing a problem, improving a pathway or changing something that will make tomorrow better than today.

06

Moments that matter

A thank you, a diagnosis made, a patient safely home, a learner finding confidence — small moments that can stay with us long after the shift ends.

There is no single recipe for flourishing.

What sustains one person may be different for another — and it will change across careers, teams and different periods of our lives.
