The Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) looks to support its pharmacy members to share best practices to deliver the highest quality of care across Acute Medicine Units (AMUs).

Pharmacy teams working in acute medicine have multiple priorities to support their MDTs and flow through the hospital, some of the priorities are:

Supporting the urgent care needs of people in a variety of healthcare settings
Reducing the need for people to access emergency care with additional training, as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing emergency care under medical supervision
Optimising and deprescribing at the hospital front door
With additional training, as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing emergency care under medical supervision

Research and networking opportunities

The twice-yearly conferences offer opportunities to showcase posters and short oral presentation sessions to share the work which pharmacy teams are doing in acute medicine and its impact on patient care. Allowing us as a speciality to collaboratively work together and share the knowledge we have.

The quarterly journal contains the latest peer-reviewed research from AMUs in addition to unusual case studies and makes interesting reading.

Education opportunities

The twice-yearly multidisciplinary conferences have a varied and stimulating programme affording excellent Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in addition to important networking opportunities.

SAM Webinars

SAM offers ongoing CPD opportunities via our evening Zoom webinar sessions that run from 7.30-8.30 pm. Allowing attendees to gain 1 CPD point for each webinar attended. The webinars are free to attend for SAM members. Non-members are required to pay a fee of £15.
