Welcome to SAM

The Society for Acute Medicine

FAMUS Peripheral Access module

The peripheral vascular access module and learning materials are offered free of charge to organisations in order to support training in this core skill. This pathway can be used as a framework for training in ultrasound guided vascular access and permission is granted to modify it to suit local training requirements, as long as the original data source is referenced (FAMUS peripheral vascular access module).

This module is to be used only by those already competent in achieving peripheral vascular access without ultrasound guidance.

In contrast with other FAMUS modules registration with the Society is not required and Supervision is to be determined at a local level (see curriculum pack for full details). Therefore, sign off and accreditation for this module is delivered locally, and SAM do not oversee accreditation or issue certificates of completion for this module. These aspects should be locally managed and delivered as per the curriculum pack, through locally approved Supervisors. Consideration should be given to the signed ACT acting as proof of competence for appraisal purposes.

Supervised procedures (minimum)

3 cannulations (can include 1 simulated procedure) using combination of in vivo scanning and sim arm cannulation

Mentored scans (indicative minimum)

A further 2 cannulations to be completed

Core skills to be achieved

The training process is outlined in full detail in the curriculum pack:
