The candidate must identify a supervisor at the outset of training to oversee their training. The supervisor must register with the FAMUS administrator and be listed on the database.

The roles of the supervisor are:

  • Help coordinate and provide overview of a trainee’s learning and experience
  • Provide advice for trainees on where additional or specialist experience can be obtained
  • May undertake supervised scans, review unsupervised scans and can perform Assessment of Completion of Training
  • Ensure a trainee has demonstrated competence prior to sign off of overall training, and must sign the Summary of Completion of Training document
  • Provide advice for mentors

A supervisor may be any grade clinician who can demonstrate competence in the whole curriculum, which will often be an Acute Medical Consultant or Associate Specialist, or Radiology Consultant with advanced ultrasound experience (equivalent to FAMUS accreditation). Supervisors must have a complete understanding of the FAMUS curriculum, and be registered on the FAMUS database. As a guide, FAMUS accreditation for at least one year with regular ongoing experience is required before clinicians can be considered to become a FAMUS supervisor. In exceptional circumstances, clinicians who have achieved accreditation within the past year but are supported by experienced Supervisors may be suitable.

Supervisors must be registered on the FAMUS database, which will require them to submit the attached application form (available here) to, where we will endeavour to respond within two weeks. Alternatively, a web form is available at the bottom of the page.

A list of available FAMUS supervisors and contact details can be found on the map and table below:
