FAMUS Lumbar Puncture module
The ultrasound assisted lumbar puncture (LP) module aims to teach competence in ultrasound site marking prior to performance of a lumbar puncture. It is suitable only for candidates already clinically independent in performing lumbar punctures, and the responsibility for safe LP technique remains with the clinician regardless of ultrasound guidance. Once completed, the candidate will have the capability to use ultrasound to site mark prior to LP and therefore increase the prospect of success, whilst reducing unsuccessful attempts, number of needle passes and patient pain.
The table below outlines the minimum scan numbers and indicative training times that candidates are expected to achieve:
Supervised scans (minimum)
10 scans, including one patient who undergoes successful LP
Mentored scans (indicative minimum)
Not required
Indicative minimum training time
3 months from 1st supervised scan
*Please note any patient (including those who may not require a LP) can be utilised for the US assisted LP site marking procedure, but must include a spectrum of body habitus. The Supervised scans can include a maximum of 2 on 2 different simulated manikins.
Core skills to be achieved
US guidance for site mark prior to lumbar puncture across all body habitus
The training process is outlined in full detail in the curriculum pack.
