Cat Atkin
Research Lead
Cat Atkin is an Assistant Professor in Acute Medicine at the University of Birmingham, and honorary consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Cat completed her training in the West Midlands, where she had an NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship during her AIM training, which she completed in 2023.
Cat is passionate about increasing the research delivered by acute medicine. She is currently lead for Research for SAM, having been involved with the research and quality and innovation committees for several years. She has previously led the Society for Acute Medicine Benchmarking Audit, which aims to understand how acute medicine services are organised and evaluate performance of services nationally.
Cat’s research focusses on pathways through acute care services, and how acute medicine services can be organised to deliver high-quality care for patients with acute problems. She is particularly interested in pathways through Same Day Emergency Care and Acute Medical Units, identification of patients suitable for these pathways, the use of clinical decision support tools, and how we can assess quality in acute medicine services. She is part of PIONEER, the health data research hub for acute care, which uses electronic healthcare data to help understand how acute care can be improved.
Cat is passionate about expanding research in acute medicine, has experience supporting those new to research and undertaking their first steps, and delivers introductory teaching in research and academic skills to acute medicine trainees nationally. She is committed to expanding the research delivered by acute medicine services across and beyond the UK, and to developing research that answers the questions important to those working in acute medicine and to patients, to positively impact patient care.
