‘Urgent and emergency care services critically overloaded’ says SAM president-elect (24 October)

The British Geriatrics Society has today (24 October) warned of its grave concerns about the impact of the winter months on the health and wellbeing of older people and has proposed seven evidence-based actions to the government that will make a sustainable difference.

These have been backed by 22 organisations including the Society for Acute Medicine.

Commenting on the winter warning and proposals, Dr Vicky Price, president-elect of SAM, said: “SAM strongly supports this statement from our colleagues at the British Geriatrics Society and completely agree with – and share – their concerns going into winter this year.

“In acute medicine we recognise that services within urgent and emergency care are critically overloaded and we see the impact of this on our most vulnerable patients despite our best efforts.

“We support the seven recommendations suggested and urge implementation of these as soon as possible.”
