Celebrating Nursing Support Workers Day

A Day in the Life of an Emergency Care Technician – Celebrating Nursing Support Workers Day

In Acute Medicine, no two days are ever the same — and our Emergency Care Technicians (ECTs) in MSDEC truly embody what it means to deliver exceptional, person-centred care in a fast-paced environment.

The day begins at 07:30 with handover, preparing for whatever the next twelve hours may bring. After an early tea round and restocking the unit, the team checks essential equipment and gets ready to welcome new patients. From there, the pace builds — carrying out observations, ECGs, bloods, cannulation, fundoscopy, and 24-hour tape fittings — all while keeping patient safety and comfort at the forefront.

But it’s the human side of this role that makes it truly remarkable. Our ECTs care for patients during some of their most anxious or vulnerable moments, offering calm reassurance and emotional support. They help to de-escalate challenging situations with empathy and professionalism, and often assist in difficult conversations — showing sensitivity, patience, and strength under pressure.

Throughout the day, they work seamlessly with the multidisciplinary team — responding to clinical requests, escalating concerns, and continuously learning new skills such as ultrasound-guided cannulation. Between clinical care, they make sure patients are comfortable, hydrated, and heard — a quiet kindness that makes all the difference.

By 19:30, after restocking and handover, another dynamic, demanding, and deeply meaningful day comes to a close.
