A Day in the Life of a Healthcare Support Worker
Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) are at the heart of patient care in Acute Medicine, providing the compassion, skill, and attention that make all the difference to patients’ experiences.
The day begins with handover, preparing to meet the needs of every patient on the ward. HCSWs support the many admissions that arrive throughout the day — taking MRSA swabs, recording height and weight, and assisting with skin care checks to ensure patients are safe, comfortable, and monitored from the very start of their stay.
Throughout the shift, they provide personal care — helping patients with washing, dressing, mobility, and supporting mealtimes and hydration, all while encouraging independence wherever possible. Many patients require enhanced 1:1 support, and HCSWs are there every step of the way — providing reassurance, companionship, and close monitoring to keep patients safe and supported.
HCSWs also observe and monitor patients closely, spotting subtle changes in condition and escalating concerns to the nursing or medical team. They assist with clinical tasks such as bloods, observations, ECGs, and support the multidisciplinary team throughout the day.
From helping patients to the bathroom or for scans, to supporting skin care, nutrition, and personal wellbeing, HCSWs place patient care at the centre of everything they do. By the end of the shift, after restocking and preparing the ward for the next team, they leave a lasting impact on both patients and colleagues alike.
This Nursing Support Workers Day, we celebrate our extraordinary Healthcare Support Workers — dedicated, skilled, and compassionate professionals who make every patient feel safe, cared for, and valued.
