President’s Fully Funded Conference Places

Supporting Access to SAMCardiff 2026
30 April – 1 May |
Cardiff Holland House Hotel

Introduction

The Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) has long been at the forefront of supporting healthcare professionals in the field of acute medicine, recognising the importance of continuous learning and development of clinical roles.  This is especially true of the wider Acute Medicine MDT.

To help remove financial barriers to conference participation, SAM has established the President’s Fully Funded Places. This scheme provides financial assistance to members who do not have access to a study budget through their employer, enabling them to attend national conferences that support learning, professional growth, and the delivery of high-quality acute medical care.

The scholarship is available across three categories, reflecting the diversity of professional acute medicine roles within our membership. All applications will be reviewed anonymously to ensure a fair and equitable selection process.

Funding Amount: The scholarship will cover the cost of the conference fee and a contribution of up to £130 for accommodation and travel.

Two funded places are available for each category.

Category 1: Nurses, AHPs, PAs, ACPs and Pharmacy Professionals

  • Eligibility: This category is open to nurses, AHPs, PAs, ACPs and Pharmacy Professionals who are members of SAM and have had a poster accepted to conference.
  • Purpose: To support individuals who are working in acute medicine but face financial constraints with regards to study budget to attend in person conference.
  • Rationale: Nurses, AHPs, PAs, ACPs and Pharmacy Professionals often do not have access to study budgets. This scholarship aims to ensure all healthcare workers have the resources to pursue development opportunities.

Category 2: Doctors

  • Eligibility: This category is open to doctors including resident doctors, specialty doctors and locally employed doctors who do not have access to institutional or NHS study budgets. Proof of lack of study budget (e.g., confirmation from employer or supervisor) will be required. The category does not include consultants and specialist doctors. Applicants must be a SAM member and have a poster accepted to conference.
  • Purpose: To support doctors who are eager to expand their knowledge and skills in acute medicine but face financial constraints due to the lack of funding for educational opportunities from their employing organisation.
  • Rationale: Reductions in NHS education funding mean many doctors, both in training and non-training grades, struggle to access essential courses and conferences. This scholarship ensures that learning opportunities for all doctors, remain accessible regardless of the institutional funding, have an equal opportunity to enhance their practice in acute care settings.

Category 3: Undergraduate Members (Medical, Nursing, AHPs and Pharmacy Professionals)

  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students in medicine, nursing, allied health professions and pharmacy professionals who are members of SAM. This includes students at any stage of their undergraduate studies. Must include a statement of commitment to acute medicine as a specialty.
  • Purpose: To provide financial support to undergraduates pursuing studies in acute medicine or related fields, enabling them to attend conferences, that will provide a deeper understanding of acute medicine and inspire future careers in the field.
  • Rationale: Early exposure to the field of acute medicine can be transformative for future healthcare professionals. This scholarship will help students gain valuable experience and insights by removing financial barriers to accessing relevant opportunities. By supporting students early in their career, SAM is investing in the future leaders of acute medicine.
