Urgent need to tackle staffing and capacity issues, says SAM President

Following the release today of the latest NHS performance data Dr Susan Crossland, president of the Society for Acute Medicine, said: “The reasons to be concerned about the future of the NHS and its ability to cope just keep growing – and this data is further evidence of that.

“Aside from the spread of Covid and the added winter pressures of influenza, norovirus and other respiratory conditions, growing waiting lists combined with drops in A&E attendance are extremely worrying.

“There is an urgent need to tackle staffing and capacity issues, but the message to the public must also be that while Covid remains a severe threat, it must not dissuade people from attending hospitals with other illness if they need to.“
