The Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2020 is on Thursday and Friday 16th – 17th January 2020, in Titanic, Belfast.  Once again, we have the opportunity to review the best critical care trials of the previous year with their chief investigators. We are also hosting the results presentation of the ANZICS PEPTIC trial, comparing H2 receptor antagonists with proton pump inhibitors in the critically ill. It is anticipated this will undergo a simultaneous livestream presentation/major journal publication.

The trials included are:

COACT – comparing early with late angiography in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

BIRDS – APRV in ARDS (presently unpublished)

ROSE – neuromuscular blockade in ARDS

SPICE III – dexmedetomidine sedation in ICU

TRACT – transfusion and treatment of severe malaria in African children

ICU-ROX – Conservative vs standard oxygen therapy in mechanically ventilated patients

65 – MAP target of 65 in vasodilatory shock in critically ill patients aged over 65 (presently unpublished)

PEPTIC – H2RA vs PPI (presently unpublished)

VITAMINS – Vitamin C, thiamine and hydrocortisone in septic shock (presently unpublished)

CITRIS-ALI– Vitamin C in sepsis-induced ARDS

SEPSIS-ACT – Selepressin (vasopressin analogue) in septic shock.

In addition, we have several other talks. Howard Bauchner, the editor-in-chief of JAMA, will take part in a 45 minute interview with Prof Marion Campbell on the publication of major trials. Prof Kath Maitland will deliver the annual honorary John Hinds Lecture entitled “A Higher Calling – A Decade of Emergency Research in Africa”. We also have panel discussions on how to interpret major clinical trials and the MEGA-ROX trial, a huge 40,000 patient adaptive trial following on from the ICU-ROX trial. The final talk of the two day meeting is the famous “Informal Chat”, an off-the-record, single meandering discussion between the faculty and delegates in a relaxed setting.

12 CPD points will be applied for. CCR20 is a family friendly meeting, with free childcare on-site (limited availability) and a baby feeding room, as well as reduced registration rates for those on maternity or paternity leave at the time of the meeting. There is also an extensive social programme, featuring a wine reception with walk through the Titanic Exhibition on the Thursday evening, followed by live music that night on Nomadic, the last remaining White Star Ship in the World. On early Friday morning, there is a free Pilates class in Titanic or a run around Belfast harbour, and that night a smaller roof-top party with the faculty in the Merchant hotel.

This is a world class event and is suitable for anyone working with the critically ill. Last year we had delegates from 5 continents and so far this year we have registrations from across 6 continents. Hopefully we’ll see you there too.

Registration is available on the meeting webpage.
