Dr Mark Holland, president of the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM), said:
“We strongly support better recognition for all doctors working in a acute specialties such as acute internal medicine and welcome the secretary of state’s latest announcement regarding the new contract for junior doctors.
“However, we believe the current compromises suggested have only been conceded due to the unified voice of the medical profession opposing the imposition of a contract which put patient care at risk.
“While this appears to be a step in the right direction by the government, we need time to critically appraise the new proposals.
“If the proposals, which were released on the eve of the junior doctors’ ballot for industrial action, are simply a false dawn, SAM will continue to support and work closely with junior doctors in their efforts to create a safer NHS for patients.”
