Commissioning guide for physicians ‘an excellent idea’

Commenting on reports released today by the Royal College of Physicians regarding commissioning, contracting and NHS payment systems in England, Dr Mark Holland, president of the Society for Acute Medicine, said:

“At a time of great pressure on the NHS, it more important than ever for clinicians to be given the opportunity to work closely with commissioners to develop effective, sustainable and patient-focused services.

“The development of a guide for physicians on how to influence commissioning is an excellent initiative and provides all clinicians with the opportunity to have a hands-on role in shaping care and services, which is crucial if we are to implement long-term solutions to our current healthcare problems.

“These reports will help acute physicians to provide a better experience for patients when they need us most and all physicians will welcome the call for payment tariffs to be fit for purpose.”
